Rolwaling valley trek is one of the challenging treks in Nepal. This trek is a popular and most demanding trek of the Khumbu region. It lies in between the Langtang Himalaya ranges and the Everest region below Gauri Shankar Himal (7134m) and also the south border of Tibet. The ‘Rolwaling’ means ‘valley carved by a plow.’ This Rolwaling valley is simply known as “the grave” by the Sherpa people because of its deep down location between the steep ice-giants of the Khumbu region. It is considered as one of the eight sacred hidden valleys in the Himalaya region.
Many magical stories of this valley have passed down over the ages. This trek is mixed with Chho Rolpa and Dudh Kunda region trekking. It is also the trail to Everest Base Camp.
This route starts after 8 hours drive from Kathmandu to Dolakha. Dolakha is a town near Charikot. The route passes along Tama Koshi river and the duration of this trek is 20-23 days. The narrow valley of Rolwailing opens near the village of Bedding (3510m) and Na (4120m). This region is rich in biodiversity. You will pass through waterfalls, alpine lakes, moraines, glaciers, rhododendron, pine and oak forests.
You can see the majestic view of snow-capped mountains like Gaurishankar (7134m), Mt. Melungtse (7181m), Mt. Tashi Lapcha, Mt. Dorje Lakpa, Mt. Makalu and Mt. Everest range (8848m). You can also see the sunrise over Gaurishankar when the sun gives its peak a golden crown.
This region is rich in flora and fauna with 16 main vegetation types, 16 fishes, 10 amphibians, 14 different types of snakes, 8 types of lizard, 235 species of birds, and 34 species of mammals.
The unmarked route takes you through Trakarding glacier and then climbs onto the Drolambau glacier. You will climb through one of the oldest villages in Rolwaling which is situated below the Tsho Rolpa Lake. Tsho Rolpa Lake is situated on the base of Chobuje (6686m) is one of the biggest glacial lakes. The trail takes you through the remote and beautiful residents of different ethnic groups.
Most of the residents are Tamang and Sherpa people. The people of the village are highly influenced by Tibetan culture and tradition. One can see the unique lifestyle of these people.
The people in the villages are very warm-hearted. There are many monasteries which reflect the value of Tibetan Buddhism. There is a big gompa called “Bigu Gompa.” The two festivals are celebrated in a year in the place like manirimdu in Tengboche Gompa which is in Khumbu region.
The best time to trek Rolwaling is September-November.
You can also trek during February-June. The months July&August are okay but you cannot see the clear views due to rain. The Rolwaling trek requires a good physical form and a good walking experience. You should have a climbing permit for this trek. The trekking permit cost 2000rs.
We welcome you to the challenging Rolwaling trek to make your own magical story.
Remember us for the warm hospitality and wonderful services.
