Rara Lake is the biggest lake of Nepal which is situated in the Mugu district of Karnali zone in Nepal. It is located at an altitude of 2990m above the sea level with a total area of 10.8 square kilometers. Rara Lake is also known as “Mahendra Tal” is in the western part of Nepal. This lake is 167m deep at some places and drains into the rivers Mugu Karnali along Nijar Khola. This Lake is known as the Queen of Lakes is the deepest lake. The park is surrounded by spruce, pine, and juniper forest of Rara National Park.

This lake lies within Rara National Park, the smallest national park of Nepal.

It is the top travel destination for both domestic and international tourists. The ‘Chucheara’ hill (4087m) is the best point to see the oval shape blue lake with green forest and the snow-capped mountain just above it.

The trek starts from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj through the flight and then to Jumla. From Jumla, the route heads north passing through beautiful villages and valleys. The duration of this trek is 15 days. The trail leads you through forests of rhododendron, Juniper, Oak, Himalayan spruce, and Himalayan cypress. Many snow-capped mountains like Kanjirowa, Dhaulagiri, and Dolpo can be seen.

This region is rich for flora and faunas. You will see numerous of vegetation including 500 varieties of blossoming flowers. You will see 214 species of birds like Danphe, Kalij, Himalayan snowcock, Chukar Patridge etc, 20 species of mammals like Snow Leopard, Red Panda, Himalayan Black Bear, Musk, Deer etc, and other species of reptiles and amphibians. It is home to many medicinal herbs.

You can see people from a different ethnic group. You can see their lifestyle, culture, and tradition. The main occupation of the people is agriculture. People extract medicinal herbs and a rear goat for their living. In the southeast corner of the lake, there is a Thakur Baba’s Temple. People believe that god Thakur shot an arrow to open the passage of the lake reducing the damage caused by flooding. Sinja valley was the capital of Khash Malla Kingdom. Sinja is also known as the place of origin of Nepali language.

This trek can be done by staying in tea houses. To trek Rara, you must be physically fit.

No technical trekking or experience is required. The best time to trek Rara is from April to May and September to October. The month of November to March is a bit cold. You can enjoy boatman while surfing around the lakeside. You can also do boating in this cleaner lake.

Day 1 : Arrival in Kathmandu and Trip Preparation

    Will there be any access to a satellite phone? If yes then what would be the charges for usage?
    Yes, most of our expedition guides take satellite phones and you are welcome to use these at wifi and local moble call Most often, your guide will post daily dispatches on the Nhh website in which your friends and family can follow your progress.

    I want to contact my friend or relative, who is on one of your trips, how can I reach them?
    Many of our treks and climbs send daily internet dispatches, and we receive updates from our guides while they are in the field. The best place to reach a loved one is through our office.

    Will there be any power source for charging batteries, etc. available throughout the trek?
    For lodge-bassed treks, many of the lodges have power available with typical Asian plugs (two nail like horizontal prongs) and offer to recharge for a fee. 

    We can cater for special power requirements at an extra cost or advise on the purchase of a suitable personal solar charging system - please enquire with our office.
