Major Highlights:
● Outstanding views of the great Himalayas like Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse and Makalu
● (four of the five tallest mountains in the world)
● Spending time with the ethnic groups like Rai and Limbu and experience their well-preserved unique way of life
● Having remote trail to yourself for the most part of the trekking
● Observe the plentiful wildlife in the area – including the Red Panda, Musk Deer and Snow Leopard
Kanchenjunga Region covers the region where the Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586m / 28,169ft) stands. Only two mountains are taller than Mt. Kanchenjunga in the whole world. The area beneath this mass of rock and ice consumes the border of Nepal and Sikkim. This region creates some of the best trekking experiences you’ll ever feel.
Many local people of the region consider Mt. Kanchenjunga as the sacred mountain. In Tibetian, the name means “five treasures of the high snows”. This is referred to its five prominences, Kanchenjunga I (8586m), Kanchenjunga West (8505m), Kanchenjunga South (8494m), Kanchenjunga Central (8482m) and Kangbachen (7903m). The five prominences represent the five treasures of the God, Gold, Silver, Gems, Grain and Holy Books.
The trail leaves you with a peaceful environment with just the wind howling and the crunching of the snow beneath your shoe. You’ll find yourself in pure bliss while roaming these high mountains and glaciers for several days most of the time without seeing other trekkers.
The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area is occupied within this region. This conservation area is a very unique one in the sense that it spans three beautiful countries i.e. Nepal, India and the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR). While wandering through the refreshing forests of the region, you’ll get the chance to run into one of the 250 unique birds and other animal species.
With changing in many thousands of meters in height, the environment also constantly changes of the trail. One day you are luring around the contours of terraced hillsides and the next day you find yourself in a pasture of alpine wildflowers.
For many trekkers, the highlight of this Kanchenjunga Region is the superb mountains vistas. Meaning, you get the mesmerizing views of over 16 Himalayas, including Mt. Everest (8848m), Makalu (8481m), Jannu (7710m), Kabru (7412m) and many more. Along the trek, you meet a multitude of ethnic groups including Rai, Limbu, Sherpa, and Tamang. Each ethnic group is unique in their own styles. While learning about those ethnic groups, you’ll know the charm of trekking in the Himalayas.
These ethnic groups speak their own dialect and practice different customs and traditions than other Nepali people. You can feel their extreme hospitality as they welcome you to their cultures with a pleasant warm smile. Maybe you can get a chance to listen to their old stories about the Yeti with a cups of Tongba, a locally made wine from hot millet.
During the trek, you move from the tropical jungles to rhododendron forests, and eventually into the alpine zone. There’s little to no vegetation in the alpine zone. As for the wildlife, you may encounter Impedance Pheasant, Red-Billed Blue Magpie, Musk Deer, Himalayan black bear and also the Red Panda.
As most of the treks lead to the higher areas of Himalayas, you must be able to cope with the constantly changing environmental conditions. You must be able to acclimatize. An average of 5-6 hours per day on the snowy trail can be very tiring. So, the average fitness level of the trekkers is suggested. After all, the level of fitness of yours and the positive attitude to finish the trek has a direct impact on the trekking experience.
Like any other treks, the best season for the trekking in Kanchenjunga region is during the Spring (March-May) and the Autumn (September – November). These times of the year gives the best sceneries as the skies are clear. The only drawback for this time is the crowd that comes in compare to the off-season. However, you can trek during the winter (December-February) but you’ll face cold temperature. Also, during the monsoon season (June-August), the views are not cleared as they are covered with clouds.
